Twenty clubs, thirty-eight rounds, and one rule that surprises anyone raised on English football: clubs level on points are ranked on head-to-head record, not goal difference. A side can sit above a rival with a far better goal difference purely because of the two games the pair played against each other.

Kickoffs are scattered by design, Friday night to Monday night with mostly one match per slot, and they slide towards 21:00 starts while the late-summer heat lasts. The season pauses briefly over Christmas, then runs to a final round at the end of May. The bottom three drop to Segunda División and three come up to replace them; the top four or five, depending on the coefficient year, go to the Champions League.
